Sporting Gijón
moved to the top of the table pending Málaga's game on Sunday after
beating Real Sociedad 0-1. Chris Coleman's side had the better of the
first half, with Garitano and Víctor López wasting early chances
after Vaughan set them both up, and Gerard clearing off the line from Xabi
Prieto with keeper Roberto out of position. But as the game wore on they ran
out of steam, and Barral, Kike Mateo and Morán all went close before
Diego Castro fired a low shot past Riesgo three minutes from the end. The win
keeps up the Asturians' unbeaten record, and leaves their hosts six points
adrift of the promotion spots.
Sevilla
Atlético consolidated fourth spot after a 2-1 victory over the team
immediately behind them in the table, Elche. All the goals came after
the break after the locals dominated the first half, with Moreno latching on to
a pass from Crespo to open the scoring with just under an hour gone, and Alfaro
putting the youngsters two up after Juanjo set him up with eight minutes
remaining. José Vega got a last minute consolation for the away side
with a shot from outside of the area, but by then the match was over.
The crisis at
Cádiz continues, with the club languishing in the lower reaches
of the table and the new president Arturo Baldesano already threatening to walk
out. And a change of coach seems to have done little to alter the situation
after they were held to a 0-0 draw by next to bottom club Las Palmas.
Dani, Cristian, Lobos, David González and Abraham Paz all tried their
luck for the locals, but the best chances fell to the Canary Islanders, De la
Cuesta clearing two efforts off the line from Marcos Márquez either side
of half time.
The Andalusians are now only
a point above the drop zone after Granada 74 beat Poli Ejido 1-0
to move out of the bottom four and above them in the table. Javi Guerra got the
only goal in the eighteenth minute after Alvaro Iglesias couldn't hold on to an
effort from Torrecilla, but Moisés missed a last minute penalty after
Cristian Díaz pushed Moreno inside the area which could have saved a
point for visitors. (20.10.07)
Numancia stay in
third spot after a 2-2 draw at Celta on Sunday lunchtime. New coach
López Caro saw his side take the lead twice, the first time when Lequi
headed home a free kick in the twentieth minute. Lequi gave away a penalty on
Carmelo though a few minutes later which Gorka Brit converted, and Okkas had a
goal disallowed before Jorge put the Galicians back in front with a second
penalty after Juanra blocked Diego Costa's shot with his hand soon after the
restart. Moreno levelled the scores for a second time though from a direct free
kick, and after Rubén (and López Caro) were sent off, Nagore and
Rafa came close to giving the visitors the three points late on. (21.10.07)
Málaga are
back on top of the second division after a 1-0 victory over Xerez on
Sunday evening. It was a hard fought game, and the visitors hit the bar through
Carlos Calvo as they dominated the opening twenty minutes. An inspired
substitution by Juan Ramón Muñiz midway through the first half
changed things around though, Sandro coming on to almost immediately put
through Baha, Rossato finishing off after Chema could only push out the
striker's shot. After that chances were few and far between, and after other
results went against them, the visitors ended the weekend down in the drop
zone.
The top three have opened up
a six point gap over the closest promotion contenders (Sevilla Atlético
are of course ineligible) after Hércules beat Racing Ferrol
1-0 to move level with them in the table. The Alicante based side had only
picked up one point from their last four games, but they took the lead in the
twelfth minute when Mariño picked up a pass from Tote to beat Queco
Piña. It was a controversial goal though, the referee waving away claims
for a possible hand ball in the build up. The Galicians tried their best to
protect their unbeaten away record, but in the end they could not break through
a well ordered defence.
Córdoba also
join the group on fourteen points after a 0-2 win at Alavés,
their sixth game in a row without defeat. The early chances fell to the home
side, but Asen put the visitors ahead after picking up a cross from Arteaga on
the half hour mark. Asen almost got his second of the evening when he hit the
bar minutes after the restart, but Arteaga did beat Bernardo for a second time
from a direct free kick soon afterwards. The result leaves Alavés just
two points above the bottom four.
Tenerife are just a
point behind the chasing pack after beating Eibar 4-2. Oltra played for
the first time with Arruabarrena and Nino up front, and it made all the
difference. Arruabarrena took advantage of a hesitant defence to open the
scoring ten minutes before the break, and Nino got the second from the penalty
spot on the hour mark after Txiki was sent off for fouling Santos. Substitute
Altuna got one back soon afterwards from Markel's pass, but Nino beat
Cuéllar for a third time after Ricardo set him up. Yagúe headed a
second for the Basque side, but Arruabarrena rounded things off with a second
penalty two minutes from the end.
Elsewhere Albacete
moved off the bottom of the table to the detriment of Las Palmas after a 0-2
win at Gimnàstic. Xavi Jiménez got the first in the
seventh minute after picking up a pass from Meyong Zé, and although the
Catalans had several chances they were unable to make much of an impact on the
visiting defence. And with three minutes to go Fran Moreno wrapped things up
after leaving two defenders for dead before shooting in to the top corner of
the net. Nàstic have not won now in four games, and their fans whistled
them off at the end.
Salamanca are out of
the bottom four thanks to a 1-0 victory over Castellón, only
their second victory of the season. Dañobeitia took advantage of a
defensive mistake to get the winner midway through the first half, latching on
to a loose ball to fire an angled shot past Carlos Sánchez. David
Rodríguez hit the post for the locals before the interval, and both
sides had chances after the restart. But the visitors could have saved a point
when Dani López cleared a shot off the line with the game already in
injury time. (21.10.07) |
