Second Division A - Day 5

Real Sociedad seem to have got their season under way at last, a 2-1 victory over Elche taking them to within a point of the top three pending Sunday's games. Only some top flight saves from visiting keeper Willy Caballero kept the scores level at the break. But he was beaten at last by a strike from Xabi Prieto which took a deflection off a defender six minutes after the restart, and Gerardo made it two from the penalty spot after Castillo was fouled a few minutes later. Miguel got a late consolation in injury time, but it couldn't prevent Real's first victory in the Anoeta stadium this season.

Gimnastic are also just outside of the promotion spots after thrashing a poor Poli Ejido 4-1. Maldonado started things off in the tenth minute after picking up a pass from De Carlos, and Campano beat Bello Serrans for a second time five minutes later. And Buades set up Maldonado for his second of the night still with less than twenty minutes on the clock. Molina got one back a minute or two after the break, lobbing a shot over the head of Roberto, but Pinilla wrapped things up on a rapid counter-attack in the last minute.

Córdoba proved that they are here to stay with a 0-1 win at neighbours Cádiz. Arthuro got the only goal of the match on the quarter hour mark following Arteaga's corner, and after that Paco Jémez pulled his players back to defend. The locals tried what they could, their best effort a second half shot against the post by Parri, but they were unable to break down a well ordered back four. The win takes the Andalusians into the top half of the table, a point above their opponents.

Sevilla Atlético are level with Córdoba after coming from two down to draw 2-2 with Castellón. The visitors scored twice in the first ten minutes, Tabares seemingly deflecting Perico's shot past Vargas for the first, and Biagorri getting on the end of Aurelio's free kick for the second. Before they had much time to celebrate though Juanjo headed one back, and Pablo Sánchez levelled it from the penalty spot early in the second half after Biagorri fouled Crespo.

The other match on Saturday evening between Granada 74 and Alavés also ended 2-2, a result which wasn't enough to take the Vitoria based side out of the relegation zone. Toni Moral put them ahead in the tenth minute, the referee waving away appeals for hand ball. But Saizar equalised midway through the second half after Bernardo could only beat out Luque's free kick, and Luque gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot after Edu Alonso handled in the area. Mena saved a point for the visitors though, beating Jaime with a late strike.(22.09.07)

Numancia moved back to the top of the table pending Málaga's game later in the day after beating Hércules 1-3 on Sunday lunchtime. Del Pino gave the visitors a first half lead after Prats could only parry a shot from Carmelo, but Blas Pérez picked up an assist from Tote to equalise with a quarter of an hour to go. A draw appeared to be on the cards, but five minutes from the end Nagore restored the lead following a corner, the referee failing to spot he controlled the ball with his hand. And with the local players still unsettled, Mario flicked in Bolo's cross a minute later for the final result.

Málaga are going from strength to strength this season, and they beat Eibar 1-0 on Sunday evening to make it five wins out of five. It was not an easy victory though, and the visitors could have been ahead by the break had Zurutuza's shot not come back off the woodwork. Twelve minutes in to the second half though Baha picked up a cross from Calleja to fire an impressive shot past Pichu Cuéllar to win the match.

Sporting Gijón finished the weekend in third spot thanks to a 1-0 victory against an Albacete side who have only picked up one point so far this season. Visiting coach Quique Hernández lined up with five defenders to at least try and staunch the flow at the back. And they held on until two minutes after the restart, when Kike Mateo fired a shot into the top corner of Javi Martínez's net from the corner of the area.

Celta finally recorded their first home win of the season, new signing Okkas getting both goals early in the second half in a belaboured 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. Local keeper Pinto was the busiest man on the park in the first half as the away side dominated, but six minutes after the restart Okkas got on the end of Jorge's free kick to head past Nacho González. And soon afterwards the Greek striker took advantage of slack defending to make it two and leave the Canary Islanders at the bottom of the table.

Celta's neighbours Racing Ferrol suffered their first defeat though, losing 1-2 at home to a Xerez side who themselves had not won a game this season. Yordi gave the Andalusians the lead after Michel set him up with a quarter of an hour on the clock, and just a couple of minutes later the locals were left with ten men when Jaime Junior was sent off. Héctor Verdés headed home a free kick soon afterwards to make it two, and Jonathan Pereira got one back on the counter-attack just a minute in to the second half. And although numbers were evened up when Yordi was sent off ten minutes later, that was how it stayed.

Finally Tenerife beat Salamanca 2-1 in the last match on Sunday evening, taking the Canary Islanders away from the danger zone and leaving their opponents just a place above the bottom four. Alvaro Jurado put the visitors ahead with a glancing header from Quique Martín's free kick in the twelfth minute. But Nino headed in Blanco's cross on the stroke of half time to make it all square, and substitute Arruabarrena scored a very late winner for the home side, beating Alberto with a shot on the turn, (23.09.07)
