Numancia and Cádiz
are the early leaders in the second division after both won their opening
games. Numancia beat Las Palmas 3-0, with Juan Carlos Moreno
opening the scoring from a free kick midway through the first half. Brit added
the second from the penalty spot just three minutes in to the second half after
Cobos was sent off for bringing down Del Pino, and Quero made it three later
on, beating Pindado from a wide angle.
Cádiz won 2-0
against league newcomers Granada 74, who were only given the green light
to play in the second division a couple of days ago after their take over of
Ciudad Murcia in the summer. Both FIFA and UEFA had objected to the move, but
an arbitrating body ruled in favour of the Andalusians in the end. It was a
disappointing start for them though, Enrique setting up Lucas Lobos to open the
scoring early in the second half and scoring the second himself in the last
minute.
Draws in the other two
matches played on Saturday, with transfer listed Yordi scoring twice for
Xerez as they held Hércules 2-2. New signing Blas
Pérez headed the locals into the lead on the half hour mark after good
work by Farinós and Ismael, and Montenegro making it two just before the
break after catching out Chema with a long free kick. But Yordi headed one back
a minute after the restart and then won a penalty a few minutes later which he
converted himself.
Newly promoted sides
Racing Ferrol and Eibar got their first points on the board as
well after their game finished 1-1. Del Olmo put the Basque side ahead in the
twentieth minute, beating Queco at the second attempt, but the locals had
several chances before Lamatina headed Codina's cross past Pichu Cuéllar
ten minutes from the final whistle. (25.08.07)
Disappointment for
Celta in the opening day of the season, Hristo Stoichkov's side being
held to a 1-1 draw by Córdoba on Sunday lunchtime. Two divisions
separated these teams last season, but the Andalusians were igual to their
opponents, and Javi Moreno and Asen caused problems for the local defence.
Canobbio thought he had got the winner for the Galicians though when he beat
Julio Iglesias with five minutes to go, but substitute Arthuro got on the end
of a Diego Reyes cross a couple of minutes later to save a point.
Sporting Gijón
top the second division table at the end of the first weekend after a 4-0 win
over Poli Ejido later on Sunday evening. Barral got two for the
Asturians, a penalty in the seventeenth minute after Usero was sent off for
handling in the area and a second goal on a quick counter-attack after the
break. The striker came close to completing his hat-trick when he hit the bar,
but Kike Mateo struck home a spectacular third and young substitute Luis
Morán wrapped things with virtually his first touch of the ball later
on.
Málaga join
Numancia in second spot though after beating Salamanca 3-0. Unsettled
striker Salva headed the Andalusians into the lead from a Jesús
Gámez cross midway through the first half, but Goitia had to save from
Quique Martín and Zé Tó before the break to keep his side
ahead. Salva set up Hidalgo for a second though with ten minutes to go, and got
his second of the night a few minutes later thanks to the generosity of his
team-mate Eliseu.
Gimnastic are just
outside of the top three after a 2-0 victory over Alavés, who are
starting a new era after controversial president Dmitri Piterman sold his share
in the club in the summer. The Catalans over-ran their opponents early on, with
Abraham heading them in front from a corner in the eighth minute. Only some
first class saves from Bernardo kept the visitors in the game, but Toni Moral
hit the bar before Maldonado finally put the fans' nerves at rest after Jandro
set him up twenty minutes from the end.
Nàstic were the only
one of the relegated sides to win though, the big surprise being Real
Sociedad's 0-2 defeat at the hands of Castellón. Chris
Coleman's side had most of the play, but they hardly created any chances and
Riesgo had to be on his toes to keep out Arana and Mario early on. And on the
half hour mark Arana latched on to a pass from Perico to open the scoring.
Tabares got a second soon after the restart, again after good work from Perico,
and the home fans booed their players off at the end.
David Vidal's Elche
notched up their first three points of the season with a 0-1 victory at
Albacete. New signing Chino Luna had a penalty appeal turned down midway
through the first half, but just two minutes later the referee did point to the
spot after Ferrón fouled Bellvis, Iago converting the kick. Luna went
close to adding a second a few minutes later, and Albacete's only reply was a
couple of efforts from half time substitute Biagini later on.
Elsewhere Sevilla
Atlético and Tenerife shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Pablo
Sánchez put the locals in front from the penalty spot on the half hour
mark after Culebras handled in the area. And keepers Javi Varas and Juan Pablo
had work to do before Nino levelled the scores with a header into the top
corner of the net twenty minutes in to the second half. (26.08.07)
