Sevilla will have to make do with a place in the UEFA Cup this season, the Andalusians now not able to catch fourth placed Atlético Madrid in the table (due to an unfavourable head-to-head record) despite a 0-2 victory over city neighbours Betis. Luis Fabiano got his first goal in six weeks to open the scoring after Dani Alves set him up with half an hour on the clock, and Fazio headed a second five minutes after the restart from an Alves corner.

The game fell apart later in the second half though after players brawled on the pitch, and Arzu and Alves were both sent off by referee Undiano Mallenco. Jesús Navas could have extended the lead near the end had he not been thwarted by Ricardo, but by then the celebrations came from the losers, content in the knowledge that their eternal rivals were not going to make it back in to the Champions League. It would appear that the conciliatory spirit shown between the two clubs after the untimely death of Antonio Puerta has already been forgotten, and things were back to normal!
