Valencia recovered from
their weekend thrashing in the Nou Camp to beat fellow relegation rivals
Zaragoza 1-0, virtually ensuring their place in the top flight for another
season. The Chés started the match just a point above their rivals and
two above the drop zone, and David Villa went close a couple of times before
Baraja slid a pass through to David Silva for him to open the scoring.
Silva headed a cross from
Joaquín over the top soon afterwards, and Villa hit the outside of the
post shortly before the break. Zaragoza's only reply was a shot from Sergio
García which Hildebrand turned for a corner, and coach Manolo Villanova
decided to bring on Aimar at half time.
Sergio García and
Gabi fired long shots wide, and Hildebrand touched a Gabi free kick over the
top, and the locals were left with ten men when Silva was sent off for
insulting the referee. But they held on for an important victory which leaves
their opponents facing a difficult last two matches, starting with a fixture
against Real Madrid at the weekend. |
