Real Madrid are ten points clear at the top of the table after a 0-2 victory at Racing Santander, and they will be crowned league champions if they win next weekend and Villarreal and Barcelona fail to do so. Raúl gave Bernd Schuster's side an early lead, playing Robinho's cross on past Toño with just under a quarter of an hour gone. It was the team captain's 291st goal for his club, taking him past the mark of the mythical Santillana.

Racing were in with a chance of moving ahead of Atlético to fourth though, and for most of the first half they were on top. Casillas had to be on his toes to keep out a couple of efforts from Tchité, penalty appeals for a possible foul by Pepe on Serrano and hand ball by Sergio Ramos were turned down, and César Navas headed just wide a couple of times close to half time.

Madrid wrestled back control after the break though, Toño having to save from Robinho and Raúl soon after the restart. Tchité caused some problems at the other end, but substitute Higuaín shot wide when free in front of goal, and then had a strike disallowed for a previous foul on the keeper. With the game coming to an end though Higuaín picked up a pass from Balboa to drill a shot low past the keeper, and it was all over. The players celebrated on the pitch, knowing now that the league title is virtually a formality.
