It was back to the real
world for Valencia after winning the cup midweek, a crushing 5-1 defeat at the
hands of Athletic Bilbao leaving Ronald Koeman's side level with Valladolid,
just two points above the drop zone. Raúl Albiol deflected a long shot
from Javi Martínez in to his own net early on, and although Villa hit
the bar with a free kick, Llorente made it two when he got on the end of
Etxeberría's cross just four minutes after the restart.
The attacks continued, Mora
having to make a couple of saves before Llorente tried to chip him, the keeper
stopping the ball but the striker quick to recover it and roll it in to the
net. Villa pulled one back with a free kick which took a deflection off
Amorebieta in the defensive wall, but Iraola and Aduríz completed the
rout late on. Koeman's credit had run out, and the following day the board
decided it was time for him and his assistants to make room for somebody else.
