Sevilla failed to take advantage of Atlético Madrid's defeat earlier on Saturday evening, a 1-4 loss to Almería leaving them still in sixth place, now only three points above their opponents in the table.

Despite early pressure from the home side, the visitors went in front when Daniel Alves headed Soriano's cross into his own net trying to clear for a corner. Negredo fired a penalty against the post later in the first half after he was fouled by David Prieto, but made up for his mistake scoring a second soon after the restart after Palop could only push out a swerving shot from Soriano.

Soon afterwards Juanma Ortíz made it three, lifting the ball over the keeper after running on to Melo's stabbed pass, and in the next four minutes Kone headed against the post, Adriano was sent off for a remark to the referee, and Negredo scored a fourth after Juanma's cross was headed on.

Sevilla were awarded a penalty themselves when Pulido brought down Daniel Alves, but his namesake Diego Alves saved Kanouté's spot kick, and also the resulting follow up. The visiting keeper also kept out Jesús Navas , but he was finally beaten when Kanouté turned the ball in to the net after a first effort came back off the post with a quarter hour remaining.
