Villarreal dropped seven points behind leaders Real Madrid after losing 2-0 to Sevilla on Sunday evening, although they remain in second place, ahead of Barcelona on head-to-head goal difference. The locals are still in with an outside chance of a Champions League spot, and Capel and Fazio went close before Luis Fabiano ran on to a long ball from Daniel Alves to open the scoring in the twentieth minute.

Keita fired over later in the first half and Diego López did well to keep out Alves and Navas after the restart as Sevilla pushed for a second, and Keita should have scored when he rounded the keeper but couldn't maintain his balance. Villarreal only troubled Palop with a couple of efforts from Eguren and Cani, and with four minutes to go Kanouté wrapped things up from the penalty spot after López brought down Navas. The visitors ended with ten men when Capdevila was given a second booking, and the final whistle ended their misery soon afterwards.
