Drama at the Ruïz de Lopera stadium, where the match between hosts Betis and Athletic Bilbao was suspended with twenty minutes to go after visiting keeper Armando was felled by a bottle thrown from the crowd. A nasty cut just below his right eye meant that he could not continue, and with all three substitutions already made, referee Clos Gómez had mo option but to suspend the match. The disciplinary committee meets this week to decide the outcome, but with a similar incident only last year when Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked out by an object thrown from the stands, Betis could be in for a big penalty.

Both sides came into the match near the bottom of the table, looking to take points against a direct rival for the relegation spots. The Basque team went ahead early on though when Yeste ran through to pick up Llorente's pass and beat Ricardo. Yeste had to leave the field with an injury soon afterwards, and ten minutes before the break Betis equalised, Mark González heading Edu's cross against the post and reacting quicker than anyone to latch on to the rebound and score.

Lima had to clear a quickly taken indirect free kick off the line before the break, but the locals almost went in front soon after the restart when Armando pushed a Mark González header on to the post. A few minutes later Clos Gómez awarded a penalty to the visitors when Etxeberría fell under a challenge from Juanito, and David López scored at the second attempt after his first kick was disallowed for encroachment. That provoked the anger of the crowd, and the rest is history.

Update, 18 March: The disciplinary committee ruled that the result between Betis and Athletic Bilbao would stay at 1-2 to the Basque side, and that the remaining minutes of the abandoned match would not be played out. Betis's ground will be closed for the next two games, a lighter sentence than usual as the person who threw the bottle which hit Armando was detained by the crowd and handed over to police on the spot. The Andalusian club are expected to appeal however, so the result can still not be considered as definitive.
