Sevilla moved up into the
Champions League spots after a 1-2 win at Valencia in the last match on
Saturday evening. La Liga's top scorer Luis Fabiano scored twice in the first
quarter of the match, starting things off with a well struck free kick and then
deflecting a shot from Keita past Hildebrand. Kanouté and Luis Fabiano
had both gone close before that, but Mata was unlucky to have a strike ruled
out for offside, and Baraja and Villa both tired their luck with long shots
from outside of the area before the break.
Silva and Mata both had
efforts blocked after the restart, but eventually Koeman decided to bring on
reinforcements, Morientes making his first appearance after a long injury
lay-off. They could still not make the break through though, and only a brave
save from Hildebrand prevented Luis Fabiano from completing his hat-trick. With
two minutes to go Raúl Albiol finally got one back for the Chés
after Edu played across Joaquín's corner, but it came too late to change
the result. Valencia drop nine points behind their opponents, and with their
president resigning midweek, Koeman´s future may now depend on the
midweek cup semi-final against Barcelona. |
