Espanyol moved up to third
after a 1-2 victory at Atlético Madrid, who drop out of the Champions
League spots as a result. The Catalans had not lost in twelve matches, and they
dominated the early minutes with Tamudo having a penalty appeal turned down and
Luis García heading wide. Cléber fired a long shot past the post
at the other end, but Coro brought a top class save out of Abbiati and then had
a goal disallowed for offside.
Atlético were left
with ten men when Agüero sent off for retaliating after a foul by
Torrejón, but even so Simao put them ahead with a well struck free kick
close to half time. Raúl García was lucky to be let off a penalty
when the ball hit him on the arm close to half time, and Abbiati produced two
more excellent saves from David García and Tamudo after the restart.
Soon afterwards though Luis García's corner was allowed to bounce
through to Tamudo who cested it over the line on the far post.
A few minutes later
Aguirre's side were down to nine after Pernia was also sent off for a second
bookable offence, but even so Forlán went close a couple of times.
Eventually though the visitors made their numerical superiority count, Abbiati
keeping out Tamudo and De la Peña before the little midfielder found a
gap to enable Luis García to drill home the winner. |
