Valencia's situation is
going from bad to worse, and they dropped to sixth in the table after a 0-3
defeat to Athletic Bilbao. David Silva poked a shot just wide in the opening
minutes, but that was about all the hosts managed in the first half. Gabilondo
bundled the ball into the net only to see it ruled out for the offside of
Llorente, and Etxeberría brought a couple of good saves out of
Cañizares. And the Basque side went ahead when Yeste curled a free kick
past the keeper on the half hour mark.
Aranzubia saved at the feet
of Silva at the start of the second half, but a few minutes later an unmarked
Llorente headed David López's cross back down past Cañizares for
his side's second. Villa, Joaquín and Albiol all fired shots up into the
stands as the locals tried to get back in the game, but with many of the
dejected home fans already out of the ground, Llorente picked up
Etxeberría's cross and turned the ball back past Cañizares for
his second of the night. It was Athletic's first win in the Mestalla stadium in
twenty years, and Ronald Koeman now knows he will have his work cut out to get
things back on track. |
