Valencia drop out of the
Champions League spots down to sixth in the table after a 1-0 defeat at Racing
Santander. The Chés had lost their four previous matches at the
Sardinero stadium, and they could have been behind in the tenth minute when
Tchité got free only for Cañizares to push his shot over the bar.
And a few minutes later the referee turned down appeals for a penalty after a
Munitis header hit David Silva's hand at point blank range.
Ronald Koeman's side had
hardly troubled Toño all night, and Jorge López and Colsa both
went close early in the second half. Cañizares did well to keep out
Munitis a few minutes later, but a couple of minutes after that the keeper was
at fault when he tried to punch clear a long shot from Jorge López (an
ex Valencia man) and only ended up deflecting the ball in to the net.
Toño finally had some
work to do to keep out a long shot from Villa and another effort from Caneira,
but Smolarek could have increased the lead had he been able to beat
Cañizares near the end. Racing had done enough though, and they move up
to seventh in the table as a result. |
