Sevilla drop further down
the table after losing 1-2 at home to a Mallorca side who themselves are just
two points off the European spots. Ibagaza fired the visitors into the lead
early on after good work down the left wing by Jonás. The Andalusians
responded with two efforts from Luis Fabiano, the first a shot just over the
bar and the second a header which Lux somehow got a hand to. But with eight
minute to go to the break Varela scored a spectacular second for the visitors
with a shot from way outside of the area following Ibagaza's short free kick.
The locals tried to get back
in the game, Lux having to keep out Poulsen before the break, and
Kanouté shooting just wide immediately after the restart. And a couple
of minutes later Kanouté got on the end of a long free kick from half
time substitute Chevantón to steer a header inside the near post. After
that it was up to Lux to keep his side ahead, in particular with first class
saves from Chevantón and Navas. But even when Mallorca were left with
ten men after Varela was sent off for a second bookable offence there was no
way through, and Sevilla fell to their third home defeat of the season.
