Espanyol are up to fifth,
just two points behind Barcelona and Valencia, after a late 2-1 win over
Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening. Gabilondo gave the Basque side the lead in
only the second minute of the game after Aduríz headed across
Amorebieta's free kick. But after that the Catalans took charge, with Valdo
volleying over the top and Tamudo bring a save out of Gorka Iraizoz, who was
returning to the stadium he made his name at. And with six minutes to go to
half time Tamudo got on the end of Riera's cross to level the scores.
Aduríz and
Etxeberría went close after the restart, but otherwise Espanyol
continued to dominate. Riera in particular was causing problems for the local
defence with a couple of shots just wide of the target, and Luis García
also tested Gorka once again. However the game appeared to be heading for a
draw when Clemente lobbed an innocent cross into the area, and Aitor Ocio
sliced the ball over the head of his own keeper and in to the net. The goal
signalled an eighth game without defeat for Valverde's side, and left Athletic
just a point outside of the drop zone, albeit in twelfth place.
