Valencia bounced back from
their midweek upset against Real Madrid to beat Mallorca 0-2 and move back up
to the Champions League spots. With new coach Ronald Koeman still not ready to
take over, caretaker Oscar Fernández was in charge for the last time
before returning to the B team. But for most of the first half his side
couldn't get going, the only chances a couple of efforts by Ibagaza and
Jonás for the locals.
With the first half coming
to an end though Miguel (who had come on for the injured Alexis) floated over a
cross which local keeper Lux misread, and Morientes was there to turn the ball
in to the empty net. Mallorca came out strongly after the break, with
Jonás shooting straight at the keeper and Güiza wasting a couple of
chances, but with just over an hour gone Morientes was there again to get on
the end of David Silva's cross and score his second of the night.
After that Hildebrand was
called upon to keep out efforts from Arango and Güiza, and Héctor
fired a late chance wide. But Valencia had won it with the minimum of efforts,
and Mallorca's run of four games without defeat had come to an end.
