Athletic Bilbao started
their game at Valladolid knowing that a defeat would leave them in the
relegation zone, but in the end they recorded a comfortable 1-2 victory to
leave their opponents in next to bottom spot. Aduríz was the man who did
the damage against his old side, heading against the post with less than a
minute on the clock and then picking up a pass from Gabilondo to open the
scoring with a shot through the legs of Butelle from wide on the right. And on
the half hour mark he dived forward to head home David López's free kick
for a second goal, putting the game beyond the opponents' reach.
Ogbeche thought he had got
one back when he headed past Gorka Iraizoz close to half time, only for referee
Pérez Burrull to rule that he fouled a defender when jumping for the
ball. Otherwise though Athletic held fast in defence, up until twenty minutes
before the end that is when Kiokili tripped Ogbeche inside the area, and
Víctor slotted home the resulting spot kick. Mendilibar threw on all his
fire power, and they could have saved a point had Iraizoz not made a brilliant
save from Víctor's free kick late on. |
