Valencia stay in third spot, a point behind leaders Real Madrid, after beating Recreativo 0-1 for a fifth victory in a row. David Villa opened the scoring early in, picking up a high pass from Marchena to round Sorrentino and score. But after that there were no chances from either side until David Silva hit the post ten minutes before the break.

After that though referee Teixeira Vitienes took centre stage, pulling up Arizmendi for a non existent offside and showing a red card to local coach Víctor Muñoz for protesting. Teixeira was to show no less than thirteen yellow cards and two reds throughout the match, but he did not spot Marchena's punch on Cáceres inside the area on the hour mark.

He did however produce another red for Recre's Carlos Martins later on when he insulted the officials after another penalty appeal was turned down (this time for hands by Moretti), and to round off a forgettable evening, what seemed to be a perfectly good goal by Morientes late on was also disallowed for what the linesman considered to be offside.
