Leaders Real Madrid lost their first points of the season after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Valladolid on Sunday night. Schuster decided to rest Sneijder for this match, but his absence was noted as the locals controlled the early play. Salgado was lucky to be let off a penalty and a red card when he blocked a cross in the area having already been booked, referee Iturralde González deciding it was accidental. Van Nistelrooy and Robinho were off target, and Butelle's first real save came close to half time when he tipped Raúl's effort over the top. And Casillas had to be at his best to keep out Sisi before the half time whistle.

With an hour on the clock Schuster decided to change his two wide men, Higuain and Robben coming on for Robinho and Drenthe. But before the new men had time to settle Valladolid took the lead, Pedro López giving Casillas no chance with a spectacular shot from way outside of the area. Madrid appeared to be heading for a first defeat, but But Guti produced a defence splitting pass with five minutes to go, allowing Van Nistelrooy to slip the ball across to substitute Saviola for him to equalise. Even so the hosts could have won it right at the end when Llorente missed the target after Casillas spilled the ball into his path.
