The "big spenders" derby
between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid was less than one minute old
when Agüero put the visitors in front, heading in from close up after
Raúl García had headed on Pernía's corner. The goal
silenced the Bernabeu stadium, fearing another failure after the Super Cup
defeat, but just a quarter of an hour later Raúl got on the end of
Sergio Ramos's cross to head the equaliser past Leo Franco.
After that Madrid were on
top, with Sergio Ramos heading against the post before the break, and Guti
rattling the woodwork with a free kick in the second half. Ten minutes from the
end Guti slid another free kick along the edge of the penalty area, and
Sneijder's low shot took a deflection off Raúl García to
wrong-foot Leo Franco and give his side the lead. Forlán had a goal
disallowed for offside and Agüero chipped another shot over the bar, but
Madrid held on for the first three points in defence of their title.
