The final issues in the
second division were all decided by last weekend, but the final round of games
still had to be played out. Champions Valladolid still had one challenge
though, set a new record number of points for the second division, and they
ended the season on 88 after a last minute 1-2 win at Numancia. Fukuda
caused some problems for visiting keeper Jacobo before the break, but the
opening goal didn't come until twenty minutes from the end when Manchev, in a
possible offside position, set up Toché. Gorka Brit equalised a few
minutes later with an angled shot, and the home side hit the woodwork before
Toché got the winner with a long shot in the ninetieth minute.
Real Murcia could
have edged up to second place pending Almería's game on Sunday, but they
lost 1-4 to a Tenerife side who are putting in a final flourish under
caretaker coach Toño. Lucas Alcaraz gave a run out to some of his lesser
used players, but within ten minutes they were two down, Pablo Sicilia and then
Hormigo scoring following corners. Cristo Marrero made it three on the half
hour mark from a rapid breakaway, and Angel got the fourth after an assist from
Sergio Torres in the second half. Under 17 international Dani Aquino at least
gave the home fans something to cheer about, making his first team debut with a
quarter of an hour to go and getting a late consolation goal for his side.
Murcia say goodbye to the
second division on their way up, but their city neighbours Ciudad Murcia
said goodbye for good after their franchise was sold to Granada 74. Ex
Murcia player Quique Pina only formed the club back in 1999, but they quickly
rose up the ranks, reaching the second division in summer 2003. Problems with
the local authorities though forced him to sell this year, and the new owner
Carlos Marsá will be taking them down South (although as a recently
formed club themselves and Granada's hitherto third ranked side, they are
having problems finding a ground to play on which meets the requirements).
Despite their troubles Ciudad still finished fourth in the table, even though
they lost their last ever match by 1-0 to Salamanca. The only goal on a
rainy night came shortly before the break when López Garai headed home a
corner taken by Jorge Pina (no relation!).
Four of five other clubs
could possibly change hands this summer as well, although none are expected to
move from their existing locations. The list includes Cádiz, Xerez,
Castellón, Málaga and Alavés. Cádiz could
even besold on this week, and they drew 3-3 with already relegated Real
Madrid Castilla in their last match. Enrique gave them an early lead with a
cross-come-shot, but two goals from Rayco in three minutes turned the scoreline
around with only twelve minutes on the clock. Sergio Sánchez put through
his own net soon afterwards to make it all square again, but Nieto put the
youngsters ahead again with an angled shot just before the break. And
substitute Lucas Lobos completed the entertainment with a spectacular overhead
kick ten minutes from the end.
Xerez lost 2-1 in the
last minute at Sporting Gijón, a result which left them out of
the top six and consequently saved them quite a bit of severance pay to an ex
manager! Omar hit the bar for the locals in the second minute, but there were
no more chances until Congo headed in Sastre's cross a couple of minute in to
the second half. David Narváez headed the equaliser with three minutes
to go, but then got himself sent off for stopping the ball from entering the
net with his hand, Gerardo converting the resulting penalty for the Asturians.
Castellón and
Málaga are also possible candidates for a takeover (the former
reportedly has an offer from a group connected to Abramovic), and they met on
the last day with the Andalusians running out 0-1 winners. It was a dull match
though, the only action in the first half a shot against the bar from Natalio.
Jonathan Valle got the winner immediately after the restart when he turned in
Molinero's cross from close up, and visiting keeper Goitia did the rest.
Alavés
president and major shareholder Dmitri Piterman also seems ready to give up the
ghost after months of criticisms from the club's fans, who entered the ground
15 minutes late as part of their continued protests. They shouldn't have
bothered though as their side lost 1-2 to another of the relegated sides,
Ponferradina. All the goals came after the interval, Fran getting the
first for the visitors from all of 40 meters with a shot which keeper Ardouin
"swallowed", and Ramírez making it two after another defensive mistake
soon afterwards. The locals did come back after that, with Wellington beating
Sierra and Elton and Toni Moral hitting the woodwork, but to no avail.
Elsewhere Albacete
tied up a respectable sixth spot with a 1-0 win over another of the relegated
sides, Lorca. The only goal came from the penalty spot three minutes
before the break, Calle converting the kick after he himself was fouled by
Rueda. It was a typical end of season game, tipified by the fact that the
referee didn't even show one yellow card, and the high spot of the evening was
when Santi took his bow after many years of service to the club, and also to
Atlético Madrid in between.
Elche made sure of a
finish in the top half of the table with a 0-2 victory at
Hércules, the first time they have won in the neighbouring Rico
Pérez stadium in twenty years. Oscar Díaz silenced the Alicante
crowd in only the fourth minute when he beat Sergio Aragoneses with an angled
shot, and Rubén Suárez added the second on the half hour mark
with an individualist effort. Both sides ended with ten men after Katxorro and
Tote were sent off near the end.
Poli Ejido ended just
a place behind David Vidal's side after they too won 0-2 at Las Palmas.
The game was over with only half an hour gone, víctor Salas opening the
scoring with a header from Pedro Vega's cross, and Toedtli getting the second,
also with a header after good work by Paco Esteban. The locals tried their luck
after the restart but Bello Amigo was in great form, in particular keeping out
a couple of efforts from the second division's leading scorer Marcos
Márquez. (16.06.07)
Only one match remained for
Sunday, second placed Almería ending with a 3-0 victory for over
bottom club Vecindario to reach 80 points, a total which in many seasons
would have won them the league title. Unai Emery gave a first run out to young
keeper Ricardo, but the poor lad only lasted five minutes before he was sent
off for handling outside of the area. And his replacement Westerveld had some
work to do before Crusat waltzed past three men to score the opening goal
shortly before half time. Mané and Kalu Uche combined to set up
Francisco for a second after the restart, and numbers were evened up when
Marcos Suárez was sent off for a second bookable offence just two
minutes later. And soon afterwards Kirian deflected Mané's cross past
his own keeper to end the Canary islanders brief stay in the second division.
