For the first time since the Liga began, Athletic Bilbao were not safe at the start of the last day. But in a San Mamés stadium packed to bursting they ran out 2-0 winners against Levante to maintain their ever present record in the top flight.

The visitors were in a relaxed mood having already made sure of another season in the first division last weekend, and it was one way traffic throughout the first half. However Molina was in excellent form, in particular making two first class saves from Urziaz, and Javi Martínez and Yeste both wasted good chances when through on goal.

Athletic were still safe, but results could still go against them and things got a little nervy. Molina made another point blank save from Urziaz, but finally the veteran keeper was beaten by his own man, José Serrano unable to avoid turning Etxeberría's cross into his own net trying to clear.

The relief was clear but the "Lions" wanted to make sure of the result, and Iraola and Aduriz both went close before Gabilondo put everybody at ease when he headed home a second from another Etxeberría cross. The fans celebrated, but there were boos as well at the end of the match for what has been one of the poorest seasons on record. There will be a new president at the club next season, and whoever wins the elections will have a lot of work to do!
