Celta return to the second
division just a couple of years after coming back up despite a 2-1 win over
Getafe. The visitors were thinking more about their upcoming cup final, but
despite putting out a much changed line up they had the better of the early
minutes, Redondo shooting just over the bar before opening the scoring a few
minutes later, beating Pinto with a powerful shot from the edge of the area
after a defender had blocked Sousa's first effort. And Maris could have added a
second soon afterwards had Pinto not been on his toes.
That brought the best out of
the Galicians though, Nené and Gustavo López going close, and ten
minutes later they were level when Bamogo picked up Nené's cross from
the left wing and turned his marker before clipping a shot back past Luis
García.
Manu, Nacho and Maris could
have restored the lead for the Madrid based side either side of half time, but
Gustavo López hit the post with a free kick, and midway through the
second half the fans went wild when Lequi headed another free kick from the
Argentinian veteran down past the keeper.
At that moment Betis were
only drawing and Celta were out of the drop zone, but then news came in that
Edu had scored twice and it was all over and they were down. Stoichkov will be
staying on though, and he will be hoping to bring them back as soon as possible
to the top flight, which is where a club of their stature belongs.
