Real Sociedad have one foot in the second division after they could only draw their last home match 0-0 with Racing Santander. The Basque side, who missed a late penalty, are now three points away from safety, and have to win at Valencia next weekend and hope Betis lose and Celta at best draw to avoid the drop for the first time in 40 years.

The locals started off strongly, with Estrada going close a couple of times and Díaz de Cerio heading wide. The visitors only troubled Riesgo with a deflected shot from Oscar Serrano close to half time, and after the restart Calatayud had to be at his best to keep out Kovacevic.

Vitolo put Riesgo to the test for the first time a few minutes later, but Real had the chance to wrap things up two minutes from the end when Munitis brought down Herrera in the area, However Savio's kick was saved by Calatayud and his follow up went over the bar, and although referee Alvarez Izquierdo left the Cantabrians with nine men after sending off Felipe Melo and Vitolo for bad language, it was too late to change the result.
