Atlético Madrid beat bottom club Gimnastic 0-2 on Sunday evening to move back above Villarreal to sixth spot. The win by Athletic Bilbao earlier in the evening meant that Nàstic's mathematical chance of survival had disappeared, but they came out bravely, César Navas and Rubén Castro both bringing early saves out of Leo Franco. But with ten minutes on the clock Maxi slipped the ball through to Fernando Torres, who ran on to fire a shot wide of Rubén Pérez and open the scoring.

Paco Flores brought on Makukula at the break, and the striker immediately forced a good save out of Franco. But soon afterwards Calvo pushed over Maxi inside the area, and Torres stepped up to drive home the resulting penalty, the first he has converted in five attempts. Nàstic themselves had a penalty claim turned down, but Agüero almost got a third for the visitors just seconds after coming on. And the home side ended with ten men after Makukula was shown a red card for retaliating after Gabi brought him down. Atlético were back after their thrashing by Barcelona last week, and at last they are looking good for a European spot next season.
