Last week's seventh placed side Getafe were beaten 2-0 by Athletic Bilbao, a result which keeps the Basque side out of the drop zone. It was rainy night in Bilbao, and the game got off to a slow start before Aduríz put the locals ahead after Gabilondo's cross was only partly blocked by Tena. Urzaiz had a goal disallowed for a previous foul soon afterwards, but Aranzubia had to be at his best to keep out Manu Del Moral before the break.

Abbondanzieri was in action just seconds after the restart to save from Aduríz, and Urziaz had an effort blocked before Aduríz picked up a pass from Yeste and ran past two defenders to score his second of the night. After that Mané pulled his players back, and Aranzubia had to stop efforts from Güiza and Paredes. But Athletic held on for only their second victory this season in San Mamés stadium, keeping them ahead of Celta on goal difference.
