Betis are starting to move clear of the danger zone under new coach Luis Fernández, and they added another three points after coming away from Fernández's ex club Athletic Bilbao with a 1-2 victory. Vogel had to clear off the line from Sarriegui early on, but Robert gave the visitors the lead with his fourth goal in three games after Ilic set him up with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock.

Referee Daudén Ibáñez upset the local fans turning down two or three penalty appeals, including one when Fernando handled in the area in the first half and another when Arzu appeared to foul Urzaiz. Doblas tipped a Yeste free kick over the bar shortly before half time, but Pancraté made it two for the Andalusians after Amorebieta gifted him the ball just a couple of minutes after the French striker came on for his debut. Daudén did eventually award Athletic a penalty which Urzaiz converted, but it was too late to alter the result.
