Another passionate Basque
derby ended with a 0-2 victory for Athletic Bilbao over Real Sociedad, taking
the visitors further away from danger and leaving the San Sebastian based side
further down in the drop zone. The "lions" struck first, Iraola driving the
ball back in to the net after Bravo could only punch out a cross from the right
wing. New boy Víctor López brought a good save out of Aranzubia a
few minutes later, and Real had a great chance to equalise shortly before half
time when referee Undiano Mallenco awarded them a penalty after the ball struck
Sarriegui on the arm. However Aranzubia guessed correctly and dived to save
Xabi Prieto's kick, the first time that the midfielder had failed to convert a
penalty in his career at the club.
The home side had another
chance before the half time whistle, Juanito beating the offside trap but only
heading at the keeper. Bravo was in action to keep out a Garmendia header soon
after the restart, but midway through the second half Iraola wrapped things up
with his second of the night, winning the ball back and crashing a shot wide of
Bravo after his first effort was blocked. Víctor López fired a
spectacular scissors kick over the bar and a shot from Uranga was deflected
wide as Lotina's side tried desperately to come back, but it was not to be, and
many a disappointed fan left the ground before Undiano called it a day.
