Leaders Sevilla lost 2-1 to
Zaragoza in their first match of the new year, a result which enabled their
hosts to return to the Champions League spots. Diogo gave Víctor
Fernández's team the lead from D'Alessandro's corner on the quarter hour
mark, Palop unable to stop his near post header from going in off the post. But
there were few chances for the rest of the first half, with Luis Fabiano and
D'Alessandro shooting over and Kanouté finally bringing a first save out
of César with a long shot close to half time.
Six minutes after the
restart though Diego Milito put the hosts further ahead, his header from a
corner blocked by a defender, but Palop only able to push a second shot back
into his path for him to score from close up. Referee Undiano Mallenco waved
away claims for hand ball, ruling that it had been accidental.
Sevilla bounced back
however, Jesús Navas almost catching out César with a shot from
wide out which the keeper turned on to the post, and soon afterwards Luis
Fabiano turned in a Daniel Alves cross from close up to narrow the gap. The
striker could have equalised had Palop not saved bravely at his feet soon
afterwards, and Kanouté also headed another chance wide. The game ended
though with a boxing match between Diogo and Luis Fabiano which could cost both
of them a hefty ban. |
