For the first time in four seasons Real Sociedad started off the new year with a victory, beating neighbours Osasuna 2-1 to move to within two points of safety pending Sunday's games. Xabi Prieto opened the scoring with a hotly disputed penalty midway through the first half after Rubinos Pérez ruled that Corrales had fouled the midfielder. And the referee further upset the visitors when he gave coach Cuco Ziganda a rigorous red card for touching the ball just inside the field of play as it was going out for a throw in. Soon afterwards Kovacevic could have increased the lead had his header found the target.

Nekounam had headed just wide before Prieto's goal, and Soldado brought good saves out of Claudio Bravo either side of half time. But the keeper was at fault soon afterwards, letting a long shot from substitute Raúl García through his hands to level the scores. But with the game coming to an end the Osasuna could only half clear a long throw in, and the ball was played back in for Aranburu to beat the offside trap and chip a shot wide of Ricardo. Real had their second victory of the season, and their visitors' run of seven victories in a row had come to an end.
