Athletic Bilbao jumped over Betis and out of the relegation zone after beating Recreativo 4-2, a first win of the season for new coach Mané. The Basque side were three up at the break, Bautista starting things off by steering a header into his own net trying to pass back a long clearance, keeper López Vallejo scrambling back to paw the ball away just seconds too late. Urzaiz scored a spectacular second, leaping acrobatically to lift the ball past López "a la Johann Cruyff", and then heading a third from Gabilondo's cross shortly before half time.

Uche headed one back after the restart from Sinama-Pongolle's cross, but Garmendia charged down López Vallejo's clearance to deflect the ball into the net for a fourth goal. Gabilondo came close to getting a fifth when he rattled the crossbar, but Sarriegui headed Viqueira's free kick back in to his own net for the final scoreline.
