Sevilla stay in third spot
after beating Gimnàstic Tarragona 2-1, although they nearly got caught
in the end as the visitors put in a final rush. Nàstic mastered the wet
conditions better than their opponents early on, with Portillo in particular
causing problems for the local defence. But midway through the first half
Jesús Navas found Kanouté with a long cross for the striker to
volley a spectacular shot past Bizzarri, and just five minutes later the two
combined for Kanouté to get his second of the night from close to goal.
The Andalusians could have
gone further ahead when they were awarded a penalty early in the second half
after Renato was fouled, but Bizzarri managed to save Maresca's kick. And a few
minutes later David Cuéllar took advantage of a mistake by the local
defence to get one back for Luis César's side. Nàstic grew in
confidence, and a last minute effort from Ismael Irurzun bounced down off the
crossbar on to the line, referee Turienzo Alvarez waving away claims that the
ball had gone in. Sevilla had the three points, and their opponents ended the
weekend further down in the relegation spots. |
