Valencia made it three wins out of three after a 2-0 victory over Getafe, joining Sevilla and Barcelona at the top of the table. Bernd Schuster's side had themselves won their previous two games, and Alexis had a chance to put them ahead when he shot wide from Contra's free kick. After that though they never had a look in, and Morientes followed up his Champions League hat-trick, heading in Vicente's cross just before the break. It was the first goal that keeper Pato Abbondanzieri had let in all season, but the referee waved away his protests that the goal had come after the time added on.

The home side could have gone further ahead when David Villa's inswinging corner bounced off the crossbar, but midway through the second half they did extend the lead after Vicente was brought down in the area by Contra, the spanish international winger converting the kick himself. There was a round of applause after that for debutant Joaquín as he was substituted, but otherwise the crowd had little else to entertain them as Quique Flores shut up shop, saving his forces for next week's visit to the Nou Camp.
