Atlético Madrid
proved that they are a side to be reckoned with this season after thrashing a
poor Athletic Bilbao 1-4. Javier Aguirre gave a first start to "Kun"
Agüero, and although his first shot at goal was off target, the ball fell
to Maxi for him to lift a shot past Aranzubia and open the scoring. Agüero
chipped a shot just over the bar soon afterwards, and seven minutes before the
interval Petrov made it two, squeezing a long shot past the local keeper.
Other than an early shot by
Yeste Athletic hardly reacted, and Agüero got his name on the scoresheet
for the first time (in the league at least) for his new club after rounding
Sarriegui and shotting low past Aranzubia. Athletic's new young star Javi
Martínez curled one in off the bar at the other end, but Galletti
wrapped things up from the penalty spot after Agüero was fouled by Luis
Prieto in injury time. Atlético move up to seventh, and their opponents
drop into the bottom three. The hankies were out at the end of the game
demanding the head of their president, Fernando Lamikiz. |
