Valencia share the lead with
Barcelona pending Sunday's fixtures after beating Atlético Madrid 0-1 on
Saturday evening. Both sides came in to the game having won their opening
matches, but it was the visitors who took the lead, David Villa latching on to
Vicente's cross to beat Leo Franco in the seventh minute.
Villa could have increased
the lead had Franco not stopped a carbon copy effort from the other side, and
Atlético only started to create problems for Cañizares with half
an hour gone, the veteran keeper turning an effort from Fernando Torres for a
corner and then watching as efforts from Jurado, Mista and Petrov all missed
the target.
A frustrated Aguirre made
two changes at the break, Galletti coming on for Jurado and Agüero making
his home debut in place of Mista. The first chance of the half though fell to
Villa, but soon afterwards Valencia were left with ten men after Moretti was
red carded by World Cup referee Medina Cantlejo for scything down Valera.
After that Atlético
had their best moments, Ayala deflecting a shot from Agüero over the bar
and Luccin testing Cañizares with a long shot. With a quarter of an hour
to go though numbers were evened up after Medina sent off Torres, reportedly
for an insult after he had been booked for a challenge on the keeper. The
visitors closed up shop, happy to save energy for their forthcoming Champions
League game. |
