Zaragoza got their revenge for last season's cup final defeat against Espanyol, beating their rivals 3-0 to record their first points of the season. The Catalans had not lost in the Romareda stadium in nine years though, and Luis garcía and Rufete both tried their luck with long shots early on. The hosts were left with ten men on the hour mark when Ponzio was sent off for insulting referee Rubinos Pérez, but soon afterwards they took the lead when Aimar got on the end of Cuartero's low cross to steer a shot wide of Kameni.

Ernesto Valverde had been resting some of his key players for Thursday night's UEFA cup match, but at half time he decided to bring on Tamudo. That made little difference though, and his side were lucky not to fall further behind when D'Alessandro hit the post with a free kick, and seconds later when Kameni did well to keep out a header from Diego Milito.

Numbers were evened up when Edu Costa was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on Movilla, and Zaragoza wrapped things up with two goals in as many minutes near the end, Diego Milito cutting past a defender to shoot wide of Kameni and Oscar González beating the offside trap to pick up a ball over the top from Movilla and curl a shot past the keeper. There was still time for Corominas to hit the post at the other end, but that would not have changed the final result.
