An extraordinary match at
the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, where Sevilla had to settle for a
UEFA cup spot despite beating Real Madrid 4-3. With Osasuna having a better
head-to-head record, Juande Ramos's side had to win and hope for slip up from
their rivals, but with the UEFA cup title in the bag and a run of eight wins in
a row behind them they were in confident mood. However Madrid themselves had
something to play for, second spot not yet tied up with Valencia breathing down
their necks.
The match got off to an
electric start, Luis Fabiano hitting the post in the first minute and Zidane
(playing his last match for the "Merengues" before retiring) replying with a
shot against the bar. Casillas had to be at his best to keep out Luis Fabiano,
but with a quarter of an hour on the clock a long Beckham free kick bounced
past everyone in to the net, Baptista's attempted header putting off Palop. And
ten minutes later Beckham got his name on the scoresheet again when he
collected a long ball from Roberto Carlos to shoot under the legs of the
keeper.
Things looked grim for the
locals, but they came back with a spectacular strike from Jesús Navas
just three minutes later. And by half time they had turned the scoreline
around, Saviola beating Casillas twice, the first after an uncharacteristic
mistake by the keeper and the second after Luis Fabiano crossed in, and Luis
Fabiano adding a fourth just before the break.
The crowd were in a jubilant
mood at the break, but within five minutes of the restart news came in that
Osasuna had scored twice in Pamplona. The atmosphere died somewhat, and Zidane
took advantage to end his club career with a last goal. Madrid still lost the
game, but it didn't matter after confirmation arrived that Valencia had lost in
Navarra. Madrid were second, but with presidential elections on the horizon
their future is still uncertain. |
