Athletic Bilbao came from
behind to beat Barcelona 3-1 in the last match of the season. With many players
already on World Cup duty, Frank Rijkaard was forced to put out a side packed
with reserves, Olmo and Orlandi making their first team debuts and Ludovic
getting his first start. Eto'o was in the side though as he was looking to tie
up the Pichichi trophy, and Ezquerro returned to the San Mamés, even
though neither was given a very positive welcome from the home fans.
Despite the weakened line up
Barça had the better chances early on, Maxi hitting the outside of the
post and Lafuente keeping out Eto'o. And with ten minutes to go before the
break Eto'o finally got the goal he wanted to outdistance David Villa, picking
up Ludovic's pass to strike an angled shot past the keeper.
Athletic had had their
chances as well though, Iraola, Urzaiz and Tiko all going close before the
interval. And twelve minutes in to the second half Iraola levelled the scores
with a shot from the edge of the area after Oleguer failed to clear Lacruz's
cross.
Felipe Gurendez was playing
his last match for Athletic after 15 years at the club, and he got the end he
wanted when he picked up a pass from Llorente to put his side ahead. And
Oleguer turned Exteberría's cross past his own keeper near the end for
the final scoreline, a result which takes the Javier Clemente's side up to a
more than respectable twelfth position after a season in which they spent a
long time in the bottom three. |
