Osasuna secured the last
Champions League spot with a 2-1 win over Valencia on Tuesday night. The
Pamplona based side needed to do at least as well as Sevilla, who were playing
Real Madrid at the same time, and there was a festival atmosphere when news
came in that Madrid had scored twice. But then there was an amazing turn-around
at the Sánchez Pizjuán, and with nobody able to break the
deadlock in the Reyno de Navarra stadium by half time, Sevilla had momentarily
overtaken them in the table.
Just two minutes after the
restart though, Milosevic got on the end of Delporte's cross to head the home
side in to the lead. The visitors almost levelled the scores when Regueiro
forced a first class save out of Ricardo, but play raced up the other end and
Webó headed on Delporte's cross for David López to make it two, a
goal which cost Cañizares the Zamora prize for this season.
Valencia themselves were
competing with Madrid for the important second spot which gives direct access
to the Champions League, and with their rivals losing, a draw would have been
enough. But Ricardo kept out a dangerous David Villa free kick and Regueiro hit
the crossbar, and when Villa finally beat the keeper with an injury time free
kick to move level with Eto'o on 25 league goals, there were only seconds
remaining. Osasuna were going to the Champions League for the first time in
their 86 year history, and the San Fermín festival started a couple of
months earlier than usual! |
