Deportivo kept ahead of
their rivals for the Intertoto spot with a late 1-2 win at Espanyol, although
their greater objective of a place in the UEFA cup seems out of reach after
Sevilla's victory. The home side needed a win to help them move away from the
danger zone, and Lotina put out an attacking line up with three recognised
forwards in his side. Pandiani brought a good save out of Molina, but otherwise
the visitors had the better chances with Capdevila and Rubén Castro
going close and Gorka saving well from Arizmendi. But with a minute to go to
half time Espanyol did take the lead when Luis García found the far
corner of Molina's net with a low shot.
Caparrós brought on
Diego Tristán at the break and Gallardo and Iván Carril early in
the second half to try and turn things around, and the move paid off when
Carril picked up a long pass from Sergio to drive a long shot wide of the
keeper. The locals thought they had restored the lead when Corominas beat
Molina from inside the area only to have the strike ruled out for a borderline
offside by infamous linesman Rafa Guerrero, and with the game coming to an end
Diego Tristán got on the end of Gallardo's corner to head the winner.
