The fight for second place appears to have been reduced to a two horse race after Real Madrid beat their closest rivals Osasuna 0-1 to stay within two points of Valencia. With another new president in the directors' box and a hostile crowd against them, López Caro's side almost went behind in a physical first half, firstly when Raúl García and Javier Flaño shot wide and then when Delporte fired a free kick against the post.

But five minutes after the restart Baptista won a penalty when he was pushed in the area by Raúl García, converting the kick himself to open the scoring. And Casillas saved a second penalty from Puñal a few minutes later after Pablo García fouled Webó to keep his side ahead.

Casillas however was sent off near the end after picking up a second booking for kicking the ball away, but Diego López came on for the last few minutes to complete the job. Madrid move four points clear of their opponents, who themselves are now only two points above Celta and in danger of losing the last Champions League place.
