Real Sociedad took advantage of poor results by the sides immediately above them to climb out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Racing Santander. The visitors had the better of the early play though, Riesgo having to save from Felipe Melo and Antoñito missing another chance soon afterwards. Skoubo headed wide and had another effort blocked by Pablo Alfaro, but Serrano and Melo could both have given the Cantabrians the lead either side of half time, the former with a shot over the bar and the latter with a header which Riesgo turned away for a corner.

In the end though Mark González was once again the saviour with a first time volley from the edge of the area after López Rekarte's cross ballooned up into the air off a defender a quarter of an hour from the end, his fourth goal since joining the club on loan from Liverpool in the winter. The result meant that Real have now picked up seven points from their last three games under caretaker coach José Marí Bakero, and they move a point ahead of their opponents who have not won now in five games.
