Deportivo started strongly
as Munitis whipped in a cross which was turned away for a corner as Xisco
lurked. Then the former Real Madrid player tried his luck from long distance
with a shot which bounced in front of Palop, forcing the Sevilla keeper to turn
it away for a corner. Sergi then flashed a shot wide.
Sevilla were missing
Kanouté in attack but gradually began to work their way into the game
with a series of counter attacks. Jesús Navas set up Saviola who raced
into the box but couldn't get his shot away. Then Navas's low cross was scooped
over the bar by Saviola. Navas then switched to the left and crossed but there
were no takers. But it was the home side who continued to carry a more direct
threat to goal. Sergio drove from 25 yards and Palop failed to hold but his
defence reacted quickly to clear the danger.
Sevilla were unable to hit
the target in the first half but that changed shortly after the interval when a
long range drive from Alves was palmed away by Molina. The goalkeeper was
having a busier second half in the Depor goal and had to turn away a Maresca
curler before Navas powerful drive went just wide.
At the other end, Xisco got
up above his marker at the back post but couldn't direct Capdevila's cross on
target. Depor came close just before the hour mark when Guzman's low cross was
flicked goalward by Xisco but Palop saved and Rubén fired the rebound
wide.
Late in the game Molina was
almost surprised at his near post by the marauding Alves but clawed the
Brazilian's effort away before the same player shot straight at the goalkeeper
from a good position. The match then petered out in a goalless draw which may
please Sevilla more then Depor. The Galicians failed to gain any ground on
their visitors and fell further behind arch rivals Celta in the race for a UEFA
spot. |
