Villarreal and Deportivo
began the last match of the weekend with a chance to move up to the European
spots, but they cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw which left both just
outside of the top six.
The locals were on high
after qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals midweek, and Pellegrini
put out a similar line up to the one which beat Inter Milan, the only changes
being the return of Gonzalo Rodríguez and Guille Franco, and the
replacement of Viera by Barbosa, who needed to pick up match practise with his
fellow keeper suspended for the upcoming first leg against Arsenal.
Both sides appeared nervous
early on though, and the first chance didn't come until near to half time when
Iago tested the young keeper, with Franco shooting wide at the other end soon
afterwards. Things improved after the interval though, Molina doing well to
close down Javi Venta and then keep out another effort from Riquelme.
Víctor had a penalty
appeal turned down a few minutes later and Molina made another good save from
Diego Forlán, but almost immediately the visitors took the lead when
Munitis cross was deflected to Sergio for him to shoot low past Barbosa.
Just two minutes later
though Franco got on the end of Senna's corner to head an equaliser, and the
locals could have won it had Gonzalo not panicked in front of goal with
José Marí steaming in alongside him. In the end though honours
were shared leaving both more or less where they started from at the beginning
of the weekend. |
