Málaga said goodbye
to any hope of avoiding relegation after a last minute defeat at the hands of
Getafe, and with at least nine points between them and safety the club are
already making plans for a season in the second division. The Andalusians had
gone nine games without a win before this match, and once again they were
bettered right from the start. Only some good goalkeeping by Arnau prevented
Paunovic, Cotelo and Nano from scoring early on, and Paunovic put the visitors
ahead with a shot from the edge of the area in the eighteenth minute.
Manolo Hierro made two
changes at the break, and it appeared to pay off when one of the substitutes
Pablo Couñago equalised after Luis García could only parry a shot
from Gabriel. But the locals were left with nine men late on when Fernando Sanz
was sent off for a heavy tackle, and then Alexis limped off with all three
changes made. A draw still seemed on the cards, but with the match in the
fourth minute of injury time Paunovic fired a spectacular volley into the net
from the tightest of angles to give Bernd Schuster's side another win, keeping
them in with an outside chance of reaching the European spots in this, their
best ever season. |
