Getafe virtually assured another season in the top flight with a 2-1 win over struggling Real Sociedad, a bad result for the Basque side's new coach José Marí Bakero who took over from Gonzalo Arconada after he was fired midweek. Bernd Schuster's side came out strongly, with Pernía shooting just wide in the opening minutes, and they took the lead with a penalty which Pernía converted after Mikel Alonso had pushed over Gavilán in the area.

There was little action though for most of the first half, but on the stroke of half time Mark González levelled the scores with a spectacular free kick from outside of the area which gave Luis García no chance. Redondo came close to restoring the lead though immediately after the restart when his deflected shot came back off the post, and a few minutes later Güiza picked up a pass from the right and turned his man before shooting into the roof of the net from a wide angle.

Real tried their best after that to get back in the game, Skoubo unable to turn in a long cross on the far post under pressure from a couple of defenders. But their challenge ended when Viáfara was sent off after picking up a second booking, and they ended the weekend in eighteenth spot, now three points away from safety. After 39 seasons in the top flight, the San Sebastian side are struggling to stay up. If they do survive though, Getafe will almost certainly be there to greet them.
