A penalty in the fourth minute of injury time gave Athletic Bilbao a 1-0 win over Cádiz, a result which takes them out of the relegation spots and leaves their opponents in next to bottom place. Javier Clemente's side were up against it from early on when Amorebieta was sent off for a second bookable offence with only a quarter of an hour gone, but the visitors were unable to take advantage. The better chances in the first half fell to the locals, with Aduriz in particular heding over the top, and the two sides went in even at the break.

Gurpegui just missed the target with a long shot soon after the restart, and Urzaiz also tried his luck. Fleurquín headed a corner over the bar later in the half, but the game seemed to be heading for a draw as the final whistle approached. However an inswinging corner from late substitute Julen Guerrero caught Límia off guard, and Varela got himself sent off punching the ball clear as it was entering the net.

With memories of late penalty misses fresh in their minds the Bilbao players pleaded with Megia Dávila that the ball had crossed the line, but the referee stood his ground, and even ordered a retake for encroachment after Iraola fired the ball home. Nerves were too much for the full back to repeat the action, but Tiko stepped up to score a second time and send the crowd wild. And all this on Clemente's 56th birthday!
