A surprise result in
Montjuic, where Espanyol ran out 5-0 winners over Sevilla to move away from the
danger zone. Both sides had had mixed fortunes in the UEFA cup midweek, the
locals being knocked out by Schalke and the visitors winning through against
Lokomotiv, but although the morale of the Catalans was low, Fredson headed them
in to an early lead from Domi's cross.
For most of the rest of the
first half the visitors were on top, Saviola and Kanouté testing Gorka
and Adriano claiming a penalty after he was pushed by Jarque as he burst
through to shoot at goal. De la Peña chipped a shot just over the bar,
but a long volley by Maresca just missed the target at the other end.
Just two minutes in to the
second half though Zabaleta latched on to a loose ball to fire in a second goal
past Palop, and Luis García made it three a few minutes later after
picking up a pass from Fredson to round the keeper. The visitors were left with
ten men when Javi Navarro picked up a second yellow card, and Luis
García got a fourth goal immediately afterwards when De la Peña's
free kick was only cleared as far as the edge of the area.
From then on the play was in
the visitors' half, Corominas curling a shot just wide of the far post before
referee Lizondo Cortés awarded the locals a penalty after Corominas was
held. Luis García stepped up to complete his hat-trick, and it could
have been more had Martín Posse (making his first appearance of the
season) had not been closed down by Palop. A fiesta in Montjuic, and a great
boost for Lotina's side as they fight to avoid relegation. |
