Deportivo and Zaragoza did
themselves no favours in their push for European spots, cancelling each other
out in a 1-1 draw. Conditions at the Riazor stadium were difficult, with rain
turning into hailstones later in the game. César did well to save from
Arizmendi early on, but in general the visitors mastered the situation better,
Diego Milito heading his side into the lead in the seventeenth minute after
Alvaro nodded across a Ponzio free kick.
Víctor Muñoz's
side could have gone further ahead a few minutes later when Oscar
González rounded Molina, but Duscher was there to clear. César
saved again from Arizmendi close to half time, but Caparrós decided to
ring the changes at the break, bringing on Sergio and Gallardo, and then Diego
Tristán. Soon afterwards they were level, Munitis catching César
off guard with a wide free kick with the keeper expecting a cross, and a couple
of minutes later Tristán had a goal disallowed for offside.
Depor's challenge ended
though ten minutes from the final whistle when Coloccini was sent off for a
crunching tackle on Sergio García, the defender's second red card in
consecutive matches. Molina did well to tip away an effort from Oscar
González minutes later, but the hosts could have stolen a win in the
dying minutes when Sergio's wide free kick bounced off the crossbar.
